If you grew up in the Seattle area, you might have memories and experiences around efforts to desegregate the schools. The Seattle School District has a long and complicated history of school segregation and efforts to desegregate. At Roosevelt High School, a group of alumni formed RARE: Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity in the wake of the killing of George Floyd.
As part of their efforts, they produced an excellent documentary looking at some of these school integration efforts through the lens of Roosevelt High School. On Juneteenth, our local PBS station, KCTS 9, will be airing the documentary Roosevelt High School: Beyond Black and White at 6:30pm on Sunday, June 19. Watch live or set your DVR and learn more about this important local history. You can also watch the documentary anytime on the RARE website.
